In Between

Here's a little song I started writing at work and finished writing at home.  I like how it turned out.  I hope you do too.

I had to record it fast, because I only had about 20 minutes of peace and quiet while Emily had the kids outside at the park.  Nothing's quite as fun as making music on the run!

Here are the lyrics:

Got into work
Tossed down my bag
Got a drink
And I stowed my things
I looked outside
At the rain
I settled in
Then I looked down

There on the floor
You're little plane
A little scratched
And a little worn
But it had wings
And there's a sky
And made me think
There's so much more

I love to fly
And I love to sing
You're just a boy
And I'm somewhere in between
There was a "then"
And there's a "now"
You think about "what"
I think about "how"

The day rolled on
And I felt grey
But your little plane
Seemed to call and say
"I'm painted red
And skies are blue
The grass is green
And we're inside of you."

I stepped outside
And breathed it in
The felt clean
And cool upon my skin
The wind came up
There was a lift
And deep inside
I felt a little shift

I love to fly
And I love to sing
You're just a boy
And I'm somewhere in between
There was a "then"
And there's a "now"
You think about "what"
I think about "how"

You laugh
You know how to cry
You know how to live
And someday we'll all learn how to die

I love to fly

And I love to sing
You're just a boy
And I'm somewhere in between
There was a "then"
And there's a "now"
You think about "what"
I think about "how"

Now I'm at home
You're all asleep
I'm up late
With the secrets that I keep
It's dark outside
I feel okay
When the sun comes up
It'll be another day

I love to fly

And I love to sing
You're just a boy
And I'm somewhere in between
There was a "then"
And there's a "now"
You think about "what"
I think about "how"

P.S.  I've always believed in thinking about "what" first, and then figuring out "how."  When I don't, I feel old.  When I do, I feel young.  How about you?

  1. Erik, I love this. So simple, so exquisitely introspective and all wrapped up in a happy little tune. Been listening to Berlin for the last couple of days. My fav song right now, "Alone".

This post is quite timely. I've spent all night figuring out "how", after making some "what" decisions earlier in the week. Paid off big time. Put something out there not as considered as I like, but got it out there!
